1.17 Why wouldn't people ridicule us?

Sloka 17

चक्षुष्मन्तः चरणकमले चक्षुषा श्रोत्रवन्तः

श्रोत्रेभूमेः जननि जगतां जन्मवन्तोपि नस्मः

वक्त्राण्यासन् भगवति न षट् पञ्च चत्वारि वा नः

कस्मादस्मान् न हसतु जनः स्तोष्यतः त्वद् गुणौघम्

cakṣuṣmantaḥ caraṇakamale cakṣuṣā śrotravantaḥ

śrotrebhūmeḥ janani jagatāṁ janmavantopi nasmaḥ

vaktrāṇyāsan bhagavati na ṣaṭ pañca catvāri vā naḥ

kasmādasmān na hasatu janaḥ stoṣyataḥ tvad guṇaugham

சக்ஷுஷ்மந்தஹ சரணகமலே சக்ஷுஷா ஶ்ரோத்ரவந்த:

ஶ்ரோத்ரேபூ₄மே: ஜநநி ஜக₃தாம் ஜந்மவந்தோபி நஸ்ம:

வக்த்ராண்யாஸன் ப₄கவதி ந ஷட் பஞ்ச சத்வாரி வா ந:

கஸ்மாத₃ஸ்மாந் ந ஹஸது ஜந: ஸ்தோஷ்யத: த்வத்₃ கு₃ணைக₄ம்

Meaning: Bhagavati, Mother of the Universe! We are not the one who has eyes in his feet (Gauthama); we are not the one who has eyes as his ears (Patanjali) we are not the one who emerged from the ear of the earth (Valmiki); we do not have six, five or four faces.  Still, we are attempting to sing your praise.  Why wouldn’t the people ridicule us?

உலகத் தாயே! பகவதி! நாங்கள் காலில் கண்ணுடையவர் (கௌதமர்) அல்லர்; கண்ணே காதாக உள்ளவர் அல்லர்; பூமியின் காதிலிருந்து வெளி வந்தவர் அல்லர். எங்களுக்கு ஆறு, ஐந்து, நான்கு முகங்களும் இல்லை. இப்படி இருந்தும் நாங்கள் உனது புகழைப் பாட முயற்சிக்கிறோம். அத்தகைய எங்களை உலக மக்கள் ஏன் கேலி செய்யமாட்டார்கள்?
